With shows coming on and off of Broadway all the time, it’s hard to keep track of what’s next! So, to save you some browsing time, here are five upcoming shows (and links to their websites) that you Broadway-fans should definitely be on the look-out for:
The Kite Runner
Based off of the contemporary classic by Khaled Hosseini, The Kite Runner follows the story of young Amir dealing with a difficult father-son relationship set against the political backdrop of Kabul. This show, directed by Gile Croft, is set to play at Helen Hayes Theatre with previews starting on July 6th, 2022. It is set to run July 21st through October 30th, 2022.
A Strange Loop
Pulitzer prize winning musical directed by Stephen Brackett, A Strange Loop, follows young, black, queer man Usher. According to the show's website it takes place with Usher “working a job he hates while writing his original musical”. This Broadway-bound show will start previews April 6th, 2022 in Lyceum Theatre. Opening night is currently set for April 26th, 2022.
Birthday Candles
Birthday Candles starring Debra Messing (star of popular sit-com Will & Grace) comes to Broadway this spring after a two-year postponement! Initially set to release in April 2020, this show follows Ernestine Ashworth through a series of birthdays, rapidly moving as she focuses on what she calls an “insignificance in the universe”. Previews begin March 18th, 2022 and the show is set to run from April 10th to March 18th, 2022.
Mr. Saturday Night
Mr. Saturday Night, musical comedy starring Billy Crystal and Shoshana Bean, follows the story of Buddy Young Jr., who, back in his history, found fame and fortune through early television comedy. Forty years later, when the show is set, he tries to reclaim his legacy. The show is set to run March 29th through April 27th, 2022 in Nederlander Theatre.
Maria
West-Side Story is releasing a sequel! According to Forbes, Long Wharf Theatre in New Haven, Connecticut commissioned the sequel, with pending title Maria. It is set to follow what happens to Maria after the curtains close on West-Side Story. There is much to be announced, but definitely keep your eyes peeled for more information on this Broadway beloved sequel!
